Larkin and Lacey Frontera Fund determination to end Immigrant Injustices

The Larkin and Lacey Frontera Fund is a renowned non-profit institution that is based in Arizona and is focused on offering finances to individuals and organizations that advocate for the rights of minorities. It was created about one decade ago by Michael Lacey and Jim Larking who are successful Arizona-based journalists. The two individuals own the Phoenix New Times and the Village Voice Media.

The capital that was used in the establishment of the fund was acquired from a lawsuit that the journalists had filed against the former sheriff of Maricopa County, Joe Arpaio. The sheriff violated the Fifth Amendment rights of Lacey and Larkin, and a federal judge ruled that the county offer them $3.75 million as a settlement fee. They channeled all the money in advocating for civil, human, and immigrant rights in Arizona.

Jim and Michael have donated towards various activist groups. The Arizona DREAM Act Coalition is one of the organizations that have benefited from its excellent work.

The foundation was created by different immigrant youths and has been protecting the rights of the young foreigners who wish to be offered legal employment in Arizona. The founders of the Arizona DREAM Act Coalition were unknown students who were striving to accomplish their dreams in the United States.

The organization has been fighting for the abolishment of the 2006 law that forces all undocumented immigrant students to pay high amounts of money for them to enroll at American learning institutions. Immigrant students have also been barred from accessing publicly sponsored scholarships even if they are merit-based. The Arizona DREAM Act Coalition was formed since the young people felt like there was the need to fight against the oppression that Latin youths faced.

Larkin and Lacey Frontera Fund is also a great benefactor of the Arizona division of the American Civil Liberties Union.

The organization has been operational since 1959 and is committed to ending different unconstitutional legislations that target minorities. In 1960, is managed to overturn a law that made all multi-racial marriages illegal in Arizona.

The group also gained fame due to its participation in the Ernesto Miranda’s exoneration. The appeal case attracted national attention and led to the introduction of the Miranda warning. ACLU also defended Jim Larking and Michael Lacey when they were illegally detained by Joe Arpaio.

ACLU has also been ensuring that the freedom of speech of day workers is respected. It strived to end the harassment of immigrants by the police by abolishing the “Papers Please” SB 1070 law through petition.

The law had permitted the sheriff and local police departments to enforce immigration laws. The organization has spent the last couple of months fighting an executive of order that was issued by Gov. Jan Brewer to bar some immigrants from receiving driving licenses.
